America Days in Tartu
The U.S. Embassy and the City of Tartu celebrated "America Days in Tartu" on November 18-19. The first-ever wide-scale event of its kind, America Days brought a team of 29 Americans and Estonians together to help share information about American culture, history and society with the residents of Tartu, including students and teachers of eleven secondary schools in the area where topics ranged from educational opportunities in the United States to U.S. foreign policy.
In addition to this outreach to Tartu's youth, various public events were held in the afternoon to share elements of American culture and history with a wider audience, allowing participants to help develop stronger mutual understanding between residents of Tartu and the United States. In this sense, it was with great pleasure that the U.S. Embassy, together with the University of Tartu, were able to officially name the Center for North-American Studies after America's first ambassador to Estonia, the late Robert C. Frasure.
At the close of the first day in Tartu, a reception was organized in honor of alumni of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs, allowing the Embassy's team to reconnect with friends and partners and discuss further cooperation.
The second day in Tartu saw the Embassy team split into three smaller groups and branch out to separate volunteer activities around the city, including activities at a local youth center, pet shelter and kindergarten.
The U.S. Embassy in Tallinn appreciates the interest, cooperation, assistance and energy of City of Tartu officials, together with the many residents of Tartu, in working together to make America Days a reality.
