Ambassador Jeffrey Levine, along with visiting Holocaust memory expert Dr. Jill Vexler, joined members of the Jewish community in Estonia in observing a special ceremony as part of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The UN General Assembly in 2005 designated January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, an annual day of commemoration when every member state of the UN is invited to honor the victims of the Nazi era and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides. It is on this day that we remember the lives of millions of innocent Jews, Roma, Homosexuals and disabled who were victims of the Nazi regime. We must speak their names and we must remember, for only together, by refusing to stand silently by and allow hate and bigotry to flourish, can we make “Never Again” not just a hope, but a reality.
