President Clinton Sent Condolence Letter to President Meri

United States President William J. Clinton sent a condolence letter on the occasion of the Kurkse tragedy to President Meri on September 19, 1997. Text of the letter follows:

Washington, D.C.
September 19, 1997

Dear Mr. President:

We are greatly saddened to learn of the Estonian servicemen who lost their lives during September 11 exercises off the Paldiski coast. On behalf of the Government and the people of the United States, I extend to you our deepest sympathies and sorrow for the loss of some of "Estonia's finest."

In honor of their memory, bravery, and dedication to a free and independent Estonia, let us redouble our efforts to promote Estonia's rightful place as a full partner in building the new Europe, both through the Baltic Peacekeeping Battalion and other cooperative security partnerships.

Sincerely,
William J. Clinton
