"American Corner" to Open in Kuressaare
The Embassy of the United States will open Estonia's third "American
Corner" at the Saare County Central Library in Kuressaare on April 13. It
will be the largest collection of information from and about the United
States on the island of Saaremaa, and will serve as a resource to
introduce history, culture and American contemporary life to the people of
Saaremaa.
This project represents an investment of over $25,000 (300,000 EEKs) from
the U.S. Government, and months of close cooperation between the Saare
County library staff and the U.S. Embassy's Information Resource Center.
"The American Corner" will include a collection of 500 new reference,
fiction, and non-fiction books that span the broad range of U.S. culture
and history. It also brings new subscriptions to U.S. periodicals to the
library, as well as a collection of videotapes and CD-ROM's.
The Embassy
has plans to hold speaking events at this Corner. Starting from the
opening day until the end of May, visitors can enjoy the poster exhibition
of U.S. photographer/architectural historian John Margolies's "Roadside
Architecture," which was recently exhibited at the Architecture Museum in
Tallinn.
U.S. Ambassador Aldona Wos, M.D., Mayor of Kuressaare Jaanus Tamkivi,
Acting County Governor Hans Teiv, and Ministry of Culture
Advisor on Library Issues Meeli Veskus will speak at the opening ceremony.
The first two American Corners in Estonia, in Narva and Viljandi, were
opened in March 2004.
