Plaque Ceremony
October 22. 2007

Ambassador Stanley Davis Phillips (left)
and Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet unveiled
a historical marker on the wall of the U.S. Embassy in Tallinn.

The plaque reads: "The U.S. Mission to the Republic of Estonia was located in this building
from April 1, 1930 until September 5, 1940 when it was forced to close after the illegal
incorporation of Estonia into the Soviet Union."
On October 22, Ambassador Phillips and Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet unveiled a plaque on the front of the Embassy building highlighting the fact that the U.S. Mission to Estonia worked in the same location from 1930 to 1940 until it was forced to close due to the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union. Both Ambassador Phillips and the Foreign Minister talked about this year's 85th anniversary of U.S.-Estonian relations. The ceremony echoed the official opening of the U.S. Embassy in 1992 in which the United States was represented by Vice President Dan Quayle.
